Tech Tuesday – The ‘Queen of Shitty Robots’ lives up to her title – Simone Giertz gets a manicure from a robot

Simone Giertz, aka The Queen of Shitty Robots, is known around the nerdosphere for her inventions. Unlike John B. Goodenough who makes things that actually work, Simone’s niche is robots that have one specific purpose and fail horribly in doing it.

I had a robot do my nail polish because I’m DISAPPOINTED that it’s 2017 and I still have to DO THAT STUFF MYSELF. C’mon technology catch up.

Simone’s videos have gone from 30 second – 1 minute clips of her keeping a completely straight face while her robots wreaked havoc directly next to her/on her to this new format of us getting to see how the robots really work and laughing our asses off with her.

We live in a world where even dogs have mean tweets about them – Jenna Marbles reads dog hating tweets

Jenna Marbles is hilarious. I mean seriously funny. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be watching her videos and cracking up on a regular basis. But Jenna isn’t the only one who appears in her videos, the only star who shines, the only baked sweet potato that goes great with brown sugar: She also has a multitude of cameos of her dogs Kermit, Peach, and Marbles.

So what better way could there be to show her affection towards he fuzzy friends than to roast the shit out of them?

Oddly, the dogs don’t seem to mind too much.

This is all in good fun, I promise you. And in fact I asked on Twitter because the majority of comments with any of my dogs in the video is just extremely overwhelmingly positive because, I mean, who goes on the internet to just like shit on dogs?

Tech Tuesday – What will you be doing when you turn 94? Inventor of lithium-ion battery unveils new glass battery

If I live to be 94, I somehow imagine myself being a bumbling lump of a man who giggles at his own farts and more closely resembles The Pope from South Park than a contributor to society.

John B. Goodenough (real name, I shit you not), on the other hand, is going to keep making one world-altering invention after another until the day he dies.

John B. Goodenough, an emeritus professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, pioneered the lithium-ion battery technology that is now the industry standard, and now the 94-year-old is ready to push the envelope on battery innovation again. Goodenough along with senior research fellow Maria Helena Braga, lead a team of researchers who have developed a low-cost all-solid-state battery that is safer and more efficient than existing lithium-ion technology.

The battery has 3x the storage of a lithium-ion battery, charges in a fraction of the time, operates in a temperature range of -20 to 60°C (-4 to 140°F), and has considerably more charge-discharge cycles than the current contender.

Goodenough believes that his new battery could be a major push in making electric cars more viable and affordable.

“Cost, safety, energy density, rates of charge and discharge and cycle life are critical for battery-driven cars to be more widely adopted. We believe our discovery solves many of the problems that are inherent in today’s batteries,”

John B. Goodenough

The batteries still have a lot of testing ahead of them, so you won’t be able to pick one up anytime soon.

Side note: I can’t help but wonder how much more or less successful John B. Goodenough would have been if he didn’t have the same last name. If he was, instead, John B. Mediocre, John B. Awesomesauce, or even John B. Wrinkledoldnerdprunemonkeypoop, how would that have changed the course of his life? Hmmm…

I can’t even do these steps on a dance floor – Korean girl casually dances while longboarding

I spent years skateboarding around town and trying to teach myself how to do even the most basic tricks. Countless collisions with the ground and *ahem* years later, I would be lucky if I could still ollie.

Still with all my time spent scooting around on a wheeled plank of wood, I was never anywhere near as graceful as Park Sang Jeong.

I know, I know, there’s no shortage of people dancing on longboards these days, but the video above is oddly hypnotic. The music is calm, the camera moves nice and smooth, and Park Sang Jeong tiptoes around on her board like it’s barely moving at all.

Also, QtW is not responsible for any feelings of being clumsy and awkward that you may feel during or after watching this video. Get off the computer, go outside, and try it yourself if you feel that way. Don’t complain about it, get good! Nerd…

Steal a phone, get a free knee to the chest – Man watches his phone get stolen and takes it back by force

A keen-sighted trucker recently got revenge on a man who snatched his mobile phone in spectacular fashion by dramatically kicking the thief off his motorbike to retrieve the device in south China’s Guangdong Province.

As the trucker, surnamed Huo, made a call in the cab of his truck in Foshan city, a hand suddenly stretched in and grabbed the phone away, leaving the stunned trucker to watch as the thief sped away on his scooter.

Later that morning, the trucker spotted a scooter and recognized the rider as the earlier phone thief. He ran from his truck and stood in the center of the road, bravely facing off with the thief who was approaching him at full speed.

Just as the bike looked set to collide with the trucker, Huo leapt in the air and sensationally delivered a kung fu-style kick to the rider, spectacularly bringing the thief and his bike crashing to the ground. But Huo was not finished there, and seized upon the chance to confront the thief and deliver another knock-out blow before retrieving his phone.
